Kansas Language Assessment Program

In June 2016, SB 323 (now KSA 75-5397e) was passed into law which established a language assessment program for children who are deaf/hard of hearing ages birth through eight. The purpose of this program is to assess, monitor, and track the language developmental milestones of these children in both American Sign Language and English. The purpose of this session is to educate participants on how Kansas developed a language assessment program for children who are deaf/hard of hearing that is 1) coordinated across state and local programs, including the state EHDI program; 2) uses appropriate assessment tools to track development and provide unbiased recommendations to families and local teams; and 3) creates a surveillance system for long-term language outcome measurements of children identified through the EHDI program.

  • Participants will be able to describe the collaborative process behind K.S.A. 75-5397e.
  • Participants will learn how the program will be integrated into the EHDI system.
  • Participants will be able to describe the assessment and tracking process.
