How to Improve Collaboration between the Deaf Community and EHDI
In the past, there has not always been a strong collaboration with the Deaf Community and the EHDI program. Even today, the strength of the collaboration varies from state to state. Kansas has worked hard to develop a solid partnership at various levels in the Deaf Community over the past ten years and identifies the need to continue strengthening this relationship. The ultimate goal that binds both EHDI and the Deaf Community together is that every child who is deaf/hard of hearing has access to language and has successful outcomes. This presentation will share the experiences of an EHDI Coordinator attending a Deaf training and provide information about the importance of Deaf Identity and Deaf Culture. Additionally, this presentation will provide practical strategies for improving your state’s collaboration between the Deaf Community and EHDI.

Liz Schardine is the coordinator for the Kansas Early Hearing Detection & Intervention Program. She attended the University of Kansas where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Language Hearing and a Master’s degree in Audiology. She has worked with the newborn hearing screening program throughout the state for the past 21 years.

Twila Latini, M.A., is a Sound START Specialist (birth-three) & Deaf Mentor Coordinator for the Kansas School for the Deaf since summer of 2017. Twila is also a Language Assessment Program-Deaf/Hard of Hearing (LAP-DHH) specialist. Twila is currently a Midwest Region (17 states) Board Member for National American Sign Language Early Childhood Education (NASLECE) and recognized as a Nationally Certified ASL Assessor/Trainer. Twila worked at the Arizona School for the Deaf & Blind (Tucson) for six years as an elementary bilingual teacher teaching kindergarten & 1st grade. She received her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (2008) and her master’s degree in Deaf Education at Gallaudet University (2011).
