 Providing Equity through Accessible Media

Research has shown that video is a valuable educational tool. It allows students to take impossible field trips, brings great literature to life, and enhances early learning. However, it is often inaccessible to students who are deaf and hard of hearing due to a lack of captions and/or signing. The Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) is a federally funded program with the mission to promote and provide equal access to communication and learning for students who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, and deaf-blind. The program provides over 8,000 educational videos, which can be streamed instantly or shipped on DVD. Families and educators with students who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, and deaf-blind can register for an account, free of charge. DCMP has content for professionals and parents to learn about hearing loss, Deaf culture, and learning strategies for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. The collection also includes ASL storytelling for pre-readers and academic videos on all subjects for children pre-K through 12th grade. In this presentation, participants will learn the importance of educational media as a teaching tool and explore strategies for its use. They will examine the benefits that captions have for all students, such as improved vocabulary and enhance literacy skills. They will learn how to evaluate the quality of captions so that their student(s) will gain the most benefit.

  • 3. Participants will explore the variety of DCMP resources for families and educators.

Presenter: Cindy Camp

Cindy Camp is the Marketing and Communications Specialist with The Described and Captioned Media Program. She holds a Master’s degree in English, is a nationally certified interpreter, certified in mental health interpreting in AL, as well as a C-Print captioninst and trainer. She has provided access services for students who are deaf and hard of hearing for over 30 years.
