Growing Voices: Implementing a New Early Intervention Guidebook Along with LENA to Jumpstart Language Development at Home

In 2017, the early intervention program at Child’s Voice developed the Growing Voices Guidebook, a compilation of listening and spoken language parent education strategies, resources, and activities. The Growing Voices Guidebook is available in English and Spanish, and has been shared with over 40 different Child’s Voice families. The guidebook serves as a jumpstart into a family’s early listening and language education. Each family’s language environment was collected using the LENA (Language Environment Analysis) System. The LENA data (number of adult words, number of child vocalizations, number of conversational turns, and audio environment) was discussed with the family’s early intervention therapist during homebased and/or center based therapy sessions. These discussions served both as a celebration of successes and to find opportunities to increase spoken language at home. Ultimately, we are excited to share the Growing Voices program on a larger scale with families beyond the Chicago area, including underserved populations. This poster presentation will outline successes of the Growing Voices program as well as areas for growth.

  • Participants will demonstrate understanding of how LENA can be used as a tool to facilitate the home language and listening environment.
  • Participants will learn about the Growing Voices Guidebook and how it can be used with families in early intervention.
  • Participants will demonstrate understanding of challenges we encountered while implementing the Growing Voices project.
