The Missing Link: Utilizing Parent Stories to Impact Quality Measures in Michigan's EHDI 1/3/6 Program.

The impact of parent engagement on children's outcomes is well researched and published in healthcare, but how can parent engagement impact quality outcomes from healthcare providers? The State of Michigan EHDI Program partnered with Michigan Hands & Voices to creatively improve quality statistics for diagnosis and early intervention in the state. Collaboratively, they developed the Michigan Hands & Voices 1/3/6 program, which addresses improving performance statewide with the National EHDI 1/3/6 Goals. The goal of the program is to connect both a professional and a parent to diagnostic and early intervention programs throughout the state in order to emphasize the importance of accurate and early screening, diagnosis and referral for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The professional speaks to program goals, evidence based practice, clinical practice guidelines, screening techniques and referral. The parent provides a connect to purpose story to remind professionals of the impact they can and do have with the families they serve. By providing both perspectives, the program aims to move quality outcomes in the state by connecting providers to, not only the program requirements and information they need, but also the purpose that drives the entire team - giving each child excellent care and the resources they need to thrive. This panel will discuss different perspectives of: 1. The roll out of our program 2. The initial outcomes seen over the first year 3. Challenges and changes to the program 4. The future of the program

  • Learn the importance of integrating parent stories into training programs and program evaluation.
  • Learn how to integrate parent stories into training programs and program evaluation.
  • Learn about potential challenges and barriers seen by this team when implementing this program.
