Development of a Protocol for Audiologic Diagnostic and Follow-up Procedures for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Approximately 1 in 59 children are identified with autism spectrum disorder (CDC, 2018), with even higher rates of autism occurring in children with hearing loss as compared to their typically developing hearing peers (Szymanski et al., 2012). As symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often mimic those of hearing loss, many of these children are referred for audiologic evaluations as a component of the differential diagnostic process. Due to deficits in communication and language, as well as sensory issues, children with ASD are often difficult-to-test and require multiple visits to obtain complete results. Furthermore, there is currently no clear protocol on diagnostic procedures for this population and follow-up management is often determined on a case by case basis. The goal of this study is to examine the unique population of the Rose F Kennedy CERC, which is a multidisciplinary clinic which specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental disabilities including ASD. A detailed chart review of patients with a diagnosis of ASD seen in the Audiology clinic within the last 6 months was conducted to determine the most frequent diagnostic and follow-up practices recommended by our clinicians. Based on our findings, a clinic protocol regarding audiologic testing for children with ASD will be developed. We anticipate that this information will be helpful for audiologists working with children with ASD to aid in the diagnostic and follow-up procedures.

  • To identify the symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorder that mimic hearing loss
  • To determine the most frequent audiological practices utilized at CERC when working with children with autism spectrum disorder
  • To develop a clinic protocol regarding audiologic diagnostic and follow-up procedures for children with autism spectrum disorder
