Motivators and Barriers to Hearing Screening Follow-Up: Family and Stakeholder Perspectives

Loss to follow-up (LTFU) is a common issue within all areas of healthcare, with many common barriers identified across populations and conditions. Universal newborn hearing screenings have improved the identification of hearing loss through hospital screenings, however, there remains a gap in diagnosis due to LTFU. Published literature focuses on parent populations, individuals themselves, outreach professionals, medical professionals, and medical records when obtaining barriers and motivators related to LTFU. Published research has not made direct comparisons between parents and individuals versus the medical professionals and medical records. These comparisons have the possibility to highlight commonalities between populations, alongside misconceptions or misunderstandings between the different populations. This information may be useful in determining how to decrease the LTFU rates in Idaho. Surveys with open-ended questions will be mailed to Idaho families who have followed up with hearing evaluation, Idaho early intervention teachers and Idaho pediatric audiologists. Responses will be reviewed, categorized and compared to identify commonalities and differences. Both family and stakeholder survey responses will be used to brainstorm new solutions. Potential solutions for motivating more families to follow-up and for removing barriers to follow-up will be identified and shared.

  • Participants will list the potential solutions to minimize loss to follow-up suggested by survey participants.
  • Participants will describe the motivation and potential barriers identified by survey participants.
  • Participants will compare the responses between groups of survey participants.
