 Interprofessional Practice: The Key to Positive Outcomes for Children with Hearing Loss

This presentation will describe the critical role of interprofessional practice (IPP) on the management of children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). Featuring professionals across settings and utilizing case-based discussion this presentation will illustrate how IPP teams are the keys to optimal care for these children and their families from birth to school-aged. Professionals will learn how to use IPP teams in identification, assessment/evaluation, and the on-going treatment of children with hearing loss. Available resources for use across settings and professions will be provided.

  • Identify and discuss interprofessional collaborative practice and the key factors associated with the comprehensive care of children with hearing loss.
  • Utilizing case-based discussions identify key elements and barriers to effective interprofessional practice associated with the management of children with hearing loss.
  • Review and discuss developmental impact of hearing loss by degree and type of loss.

Presenter: Heather Durham

Heather Durham is a Pediatric Audiologist, Director of Pediatric Audiology, and Newborn Hearing Screening Coordinator for the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR. She has worked closely with the Oregon EHDI program for a number of years and shares the goals and vision of increased and improved reporting, tracking and analysis of data for the state of Oregon. In her free time, she enjoys a good murder mystery and a microbrew.

Presenter: Claire Leake

Claire is the speech and language pathologist at Tucker Maxon School. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007 with her bachelor’s degree in communicative disorders and her master’s degree in 2009 in speech and language pathology. She completed the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities fellowship at the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center (CDRC) at Oregon Health and Science University in 2010. Prior to coming to Tucker in 2014, Claire worked as a pediatric speech and language pathologist at the CDRC and the Children’s Developmental Health Institute.

Presenter: Shelby Atwill

Shelby Atwill, AuD is the pediatric audiologist at Tucker Maxon School, a non-profit school in Portland specializing in the education of children with hearing loss alongside hearing peers. Shelby has been at TMS since 2014. Shelby also serves on the Oregon Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program team.

Anne Heassler is an Assistant Professor at Pacific University. Her areas of expertise include clinical and interprofessional education. When she is not managing hearing screenings in the schools you can find her running or at a Timbers game.

Presenter: Kristi Atkins

Kristi Atkins is an assistant professor and speech-language pathologist at the Institute on Development & Disability at Oregon Health & Science University. She is also an Educational Leadership EdD candidate at Portland State University. She works on pediatric interdisciplinary teams in the Autism, AAC, Hearing Loss, and Developmental Evaluation clinics.
