The Melding Pot: Strengthening EHDI Stakeholder Partnerships by the Blending of Parent and Professional Data
According to the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) 2013 Supplement's "Goal 8: Families will be active participants at the state/territory and local levels." This level of participation has challenged both parents and professionals alike in bridging the gap between family and professional partnership. Yet we know, the collaboration between these EHDI stakeholders is an integral component of improving state Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) systems and outcomes for children.
For the purpose of this presentation, we will address the question; how can state EHDI teams effectively combine collected quantitative data with the storytelling of families to meaningfully impact awareness and change in their state or territory?
By utilizing an adult learning lens, presenters will offer challenges parents face making meaning from a bombardment of quantitative data, and conclude with concrete best practice suggestions that will help to convey a meaningful and impactful message using multiple forms of data.
Participants will walk away with strategies they can use to link the direct qualitative experience of families with collected quantitative data driven content in order to increase positive stakeholder partnership to attain their goals of children reaching their full potential.
- 1. Participants will be able to define with examples Goal 8 of the JCIH 2013 Supplement.
- 2. Participants will explore adult learning principles to increase active parent participation in development and implementation of EHDI systems.
- 3. Participants will identify types of data (qualitative and quantitative) to integrate and strengthen key points.

Christine is the mother of two deaf and hard of hearing young adults. She's worked supporting parents for the past 17 years and is the program coordinator of Washington State Hands & Voices Guide By Your Side Program.
Over the years, she has worked closely with Washington State's EHDDI program as a parent leader.
Christine earned a Masters of Education in Adult Learning with focus on parents as adult learners.

Amanda Hvass

Amanda is a mother of three boys, one of which is Deaf plus. Having experienced the EHDI system as a parent, she now as a Guide By Your Side Coordinator leads the program and collaborates with professionals in the field. With special interest in collaboration, she works with the Oregon EHDI team, their Advisory Committee, Hands & Voices and her local school district to promote healthy connections and successful children. She holds a certification in Performance Coaching and working with teams for healthy outcomes within their organization or business.

Beth Jones is the Executive Director for Nevada Hands & Voices, as well as the Guide By Your Side Coordinator and an Educational Advocate for the ASTra Program. Prior to beginning a family, Beth earned her master’s degree in Special Education and worked as an Autism Teacher and Behavior Mentor Teacher. Beth became involved with Hands & Voices when two of her three children were identified as being deaf/hard of hearing and has been a part of Nevada Hands & Voices since 2012. She serves on many state-wide and national committees, teams, and advisory boards as a parent leader to help advocate and support children who are deaf/hard of hearing.
