Bridge to Preschool: EHDI Foundations Leading to Success
What is the role of the early interventionists and other professionals supporting families who are transitioning out of Part C into Part B? What is the role of EHDI systems stakeholders in supporting this transition and does the EHDI Act of 2017 give insights into those roles? What can parents do to prepare for this transition stage in a child’s life? How can we balance the idea of success in early intervention and still ensure that appropriate services are provided to families as they enter a new world in education? Families who have been through the process can track back to foundational principles and values that ensured successful transitions throughout their child’s life. This session explores the hot issues and the cool strategies for making seamless progress thru the process. Resources will be shared from state specific models including Colorado and Ohio. Interactive opportunities and case studies will be included in this session.
- Build awareness of the role that EHDI system stakeholders play in the transitions from Birth-Three services to the school years.
- Utilize the resources that are available for families and consider state models for other states adaptations.
- Understand the laws associated with transition under the EHDI Act and IDEA.

Janet DesGeorges lives in Boulder, Colorado and is Executive Director of Hands & Voices Headquarters and the P.I. for the FL3 Center. Janet has presented to groups worldwide about the experiences of families as they journey through life with a child with deafness or hearing loss. Ms. DesGeorges received a program certificate from the MCH Public Health Leadership Institute in 2011 at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.
As an EHDI Systems advocate, Janet believes in the principles and guiding philosophies of Hands & Voices towards a parent-driven, professionally-collaborative approach when supporting families in the early years. Her areas of interest include Leadership Development for parents who participate in systemic improvement; Deaf Education Reform and Improvement; Children’s Safety and Success(preventing child abuse and neglect); Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Systems; and Parent/Professional partnerships in Quality Improvement processes.

Cheryl DeConde Johnson

Cheryl DeConde Johnson, Ed.D., provides consulting services for educational audiology and deaf education specializing in program evaluation and development and state deaf education service delivery and accountability systems through her practice, The ADE vantage. Previously she provided technical assistance and leadership in audiology and deaf education as a state consultant with the Colorado Department of Education. Cheryl has also been employed as a school-based audiologist, an early intervention provider, and a coordinator of a public school program serving deaf and hard of hearing students. She currently holds adjunct faculty appointments at the University of Arizona and Salus University. Cheryl is a co-founder and member of the Board of Directors for Hands & Voices. Cheryl has many publications including co-author of the Educational Audiology Handbook, 3rd Ed., and provides workshops and consultation worldwide.

Carrie Davenport

Carrie Davenport, Ph.D., is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Otolaryngology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Carrie is a teacher of the deaf by training with a Master's degree in Family-Centered Early Education from Gallaudet University. She earned her doctorate in special education at OSU in 2017. Prior to entering the PhD program at OSU, she was the Early Childhood Consultant for the Center for Outreach Services at the Ohio School for the Deaf. Carrie is a founding Board member of Ohio Hands & Voices. Her research interests include parental self-efficacy, parent-to-parent support, and parent-infant interaction. She is especially interested in building academic-community partnerships with families with deaf/hard-of-hearing children and other stakeholders.
