Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) in the Inpatient Setting
The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) supports early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) for deaf and hard of hearing infants. Successful EHDI programs strive to screen all infants by one month of age, complete a diagnostic audiological evaluation to confirm a hearing loss by three months of age and provide intervention for hearing loss by six months of age. At pediatric hospitals with neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and/or cardiac care units (CCU), the inpatient population is at a higher risk for hearing loss and is generally not discharged home following completion of the initial hearing screening, complicating the EHDI timeline. Additionally, medically complex newborns are sometimes transferred from their birth hospitals to higher level NICU facilities prior to completion of the newborn hearing screening. This presentation will highlight how the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s On-Call Audiology Team manages medically complex patients in the inpatient setting. Data review of pass/refer rates, obstacles to confirming a hearing loss diagnosis and case studies will be presented.

Kristen Cortese, Au.D., CCC-A has been a pediatric audiologist on the diagnostic team at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago since 2014 after completing her externship with the department from 2013-2014. She received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois in 2010 and her Doctorate of Audiology from Rush University in 2014. During her career she has served as a member of the Evidence Based Practice and Clinical Quality Teams, and is passionate about promoting both elements within patient care. Her professional interests include pediatric diagnostic testing, amplification, electrophysiology, inpatient management and clinical research.

Previously, she worked at the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. She received her Doctorate of Audiology and Bachelor of Science from Purdue University in 2012 and 2008, respectively. Her professional interests include pediatric diagnostics and amplification, electrophysiology, clinical research, and supervising students.

Kimberly Holden, Au.D., CCC-A began her career as a pediatric audiologist at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago in July 2017. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame in May 2013 and her Doctor of Audiology from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in May 2017, where she also participated in the North Carolina Leadership and Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities program. Her professional interests include pediatric amplification, electrophysiology, and audiological management of children with developmental disabilities.
