Navigating Visual Language Resources in the World of EI
Is it possible to be inventive and resourceful? Early Intervention professionals will quickly say yes! Families and professionals alike in various states have reported that there is a shortage and lack of visual language resources and services in early intervention. This is due to funding, lack of information or infrastructure. This presentation will provide real life examples of innovative support and connections to such resources and services for early intervention professionals as supported by recent policy and law changes. The aim is to support families with language acquisition, no matter what hearing level their child has, including bimodal approaches. Attendees will appreciate receiving useful information that is ready to go.
- Identify available resources and services in visual language
- State specific and relevant changes in early intervention policy
- Create new avenues for infrastructure of new support service provision

Tawny Holmes Hlibok serves as Language Policy Counsel at Gallaudet University along with being an Associate Professor in the Department of Deaf Studies. She graduated from University of Baltimore School of Law. In addition to her law degree with a family mediation & law certification, she has a Master of Arts in Family Centered Early Education. Ms. Holmes Hlibok has worked four years in teaching deaf and hard of hearing students, mainly in the early childhood education field. As part of her position, she focuses on improving/establishing federal and state policy related to early intervention and education of deaf and hard of hearing children. Ms. Holmes Hlibok strongly believes in the power of collaboration and has contributed a significant amount of her work towards this endeavor, in varying ways, from promoting parent resources to inclusion of deaf and hard of hearing adult professionals.
