 Role-playing for Medical Students to Learn about EHDI

Loss of follow-up after not passing Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) is a continuing concern. Some families do not understand the rationale for UNHS or the potential impact of hearing loss. Furthermore, some providers do not understand the rationale for UNHS, and offer limited or negligible encouragement for follow-up. To address our concern about the knowledge base of graduating medical students, a 2-hour seminar “Sub-normal hearing in early childhood: A developmental emergency” was conducted. Advertising for the Capstone Selective seminar was via a blurb depicting the challenges and rewards of attending to hearing concerns, and the majority of attendees were students interested in pediatrics or family practice. After a mini background lecture presentation, the students role-played (primary care provider, mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, over-bearing aunt, foster mother, and telephone-interpreter) skit scenarios such as these: • In the birthing hospital, discussing the newborn’s non-passing auditory screening results in baby who appears perfect otherwise. • In the birthing hospital, discussing the parents’ hesitancy/reluctance to allow newborn auditory screening. • “Well-baby” clinic visit a week after not passing primary newborn auditory screening. • “Well-baby” clinic visit at age one month, unknown if baby had newborn auditory screening. Scenarios role-played were selected based on questions and comments from 17 pre-designed situations. The students were highly involved in the role-playing, asked excellent questions, and continued the session beyond allotted time. This Capstone Selective with updated and expanded scenarios will continue for our medical students.

  • (a) Know a role-playing educational format for medical students.
  • (b) Know the consequences of hearing problems, even unilateral, in neonates and young children;
  • (c) Know the available interventions and resources for hearing problems in neonates and young children.

Presenter: Brandt Culpepper

Dr. Brandt Culpepper is the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program Team Lead at the Georgia Department of Public Health. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Georgia and her Ph.D. from the University of Washington. She has more than 30 years of experience as an audiologist with interest in infant and pediatric audiology. She has worked in public health, clinical, medical, and academic environments. Dr. Culpepper has no financial interests in corporate organizations with products that may be relevant to presentation.

Presenter: Norman Todd

Dr. Todd received his medical degree from the Tulane School of Medicine and performed residency at Emory University. He also has received his MPH from Emory. He is currently a Professor of Otolaryngology at Emory.

Presenter: Erin Osborne

Erin K. Osborne is a program coordinator for the Newborn Screening Program within Georgia’s Department of Public Health. Erin has more than 5 years of experience with the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program, as a local follow-up coordinator and health educator in one of Georgia’s 18 health districts working with children and families, as well as at the state-level working with health districts in quality improvement. Erin earned her Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion from the University of Georgia and her Master of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
