Outcomes of Cochlear Implantation in Children with Developmental Disabilities
Approximately 40% of children with permanent hearing loss have co-occurring conditions that may affect their development and their audiologic management. This poster will review literature related to cochlear implantation in children with developmental disabilities and it will examine retrospectively outcomes for 93 children who received cochlear implants at the Children's Cochlear Implant Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The retrospective review will include birth history, age at diagnosis of hearing loss, type and degree of hearing loss, known developmental disabilities, age at implantation, communication modality, and whether the child continued to use the cochlear implant. Case studies will highlight factors associated with challenges and successful outcomes in children with a variety of developmental disabilities. The authors are audiology trainees in the North Carolina LEND Program, University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, N.C. Faculty advisors are Elizabeth Preston, Au.D. and Jackson Roush, Ph.D.
