How Do Children With Unilateral Hearing Loss Use Their Hearing Devices?

Unilateral hearing loss in children has been associated with increased rates of grade repetition and poorer academic and behavioral reports. Studies have investigated hearing aid use and factors that influence hearing aid compliance in bilateral hearing aid users, but few have examined pediatric unilateral hearing loss. The purpose of this study is to evaluate what factors predict trends in daily use for unilateral pediatric hearing device users. This study hypothesizes that pediatric subjects with a unilateral hearing loss use their device less than bilateral hearing aid users of similar hearing loss and age despite perceived benefit. A database analysis was conducted at the University of Colorado Hospital and Colorado Children's Hospital. All identified subjects were either aided in the poorer ear via a unilateral hearing aid, a contralateral routing of signal device (CROS), or an osseointegrated device. Analysis was conducted of this data that evaluated variables such as gender, datalogging, ear with hearing loss, hearing loss severity, and age. Future outcomes and measures to improve device retention are discussed.

  • Identify trends with hearing device wearing time for pediatric unilateral hearing aid users
  • Evaluate outcome measures to improve hearing device wear time
  • Compare pediatric unilateral hearing device users to bilateral users of similar hearing loss degree and configuration, age, and gender
