Gwen Carr

I am writing to nominate Gwen Carr for the Antonia Brancia Maxon Award for EHDI Excellence. Since at least 1990, Gwen has worked extensively to ensure that Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and their families receive the support they deserve. She has had a career dedicated to the support of deaf children and their families. After managing support for children with sensory needs in a large metropolitan area she was central to the UK National Deaf Children's Society (as Deputy CEO) support for the pilot and roll out of the NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP) when it was being planned and in its implementation. Further to that work she then came to be deputy director and subsequently director of NHSP taking the initial implementation forward to a more sustainable future. Gwen started as an educationalist (as a teacher of deaf) and practiced the integrated care that we strive to achieve. Over the last 10 years or so she has been central to the organisation of global parental support for deaf children, organising the Family Centred Early Intervention (FCEI) conferences and movement with Christie Yoshinaga-Itano and others. As well as working in the UK, Gwen has been essential to the EuroScreen project and to supporting newborn screening in many Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), using her tact, discretion and leadership to great effect.
