Nancy Schneider

Please accept the nomination of Nancy Schneider for the 2024 Antonia Brancia Maxon Award for EHDI Excellence. Ms. Schneider reflects the pioneering of Dr. Maxon in EHDI Programs as she has served as the sole audiologist at the NJ Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program since its inception at the New Jersey Department of Health. She received her M.A. in Audiology from the University of Maryland; her B.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Montclair State University and completed a Certificate Program in American Sign Language Studies at Union County College where she later served as an Adjunct Faculty Instructor.

As the audiologist for the NJ Department of Health, Miss Schneider has contributed to excellence in the EHDI program through her technical assistance to birthing facilities, audiologists, medical professionals, case managers, early interventionists, and parents regarding screening for and diagnosis of pediatric hearing loss. Like, Dr. Maxon, Ms. Schneider is a tireless advocate for timely and appropriate diagnosis and early intervention. She has served as a liaison between NJ EHDI and both professionals and parents with regards to the early identification and monitoring of children with hearing loss. Miss Schneider's efforts in her work with NJ EHDI have allowed her to foster improved awareness of the importance of timely identification of pediatric hearing loss through collaboration with state, local, border state, and community agencies who serve New Jersey's children with hearing loss and their families.

Miss Schneider recently celebrated her 30th year as an audiologist in New Jersey. Prior to joining the NJ EHDI Program, she was the Senior Clinical Audiologist at what is now called The Rutgers Health Sciences Campus at Newark where she was awarded the 'Excellence in Teaching Award' from The Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, New Jersey Medical School (1992); a 'Certificate of Appreciation' from the UMDNJ-University Hospital's Community Outreach Program (1997) and was a 'UMDNJ-University Excellence Award' finalist in the area of 'Service & Outreach to the External Community' (1992). As both an audiologist and the child of a parent with a severe-to-profound hearing loss, Miss Schneider served as an advocate for accessibility for Deaf and hard of hearing patients of all ages who received medical services at University Hospital.

In 2004, Miss Schneider received a gubernatorial appointment to serve on the Audiology and Speech Language Pathology Advisory Committee at the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs and continues to serve to this day as the Chair of the Committee. She has been a featured presenter at local, state, national and international conferences related to audiology. To date, she has had the honor of being New Jersey's first and only recipient of a Poster Award from the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (Denver CO, 2019). In her continuing support of EHDI initiatives she played a crucial role in the development of New Jesey's first Deaf Mentor Program, works side by side with the EHDI Coordinator, and supports NJ EHDI HRSA grantees in pursuit of EHDI excellence.
