Cued Speech: What and Why?
Accessing the phonemic stream of spoken language using Cued Speech ensures clear communication and the building of a foundation for literacy.
This session will go over the basics of Cued Speech, what it is, why it was invented, the profile of a successful user, how it works, what outcomes can be expected and how cueing adults fit into the deaf community today.
Cued Speech is commonly misunderstood by both the Deaf community and educators since it was invented in 1966. This presentation will dispel myths about Cued Speech and present information on current research as well as its efficacy in cueing with children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Cued Speech will be demonstrated.
Topics will include why a family should consider Cued Speech, how it aids in the development of listening and spoken language, and how it aids in the acquisition of ASL.
Participants will be given many resources to share and where to find support for families across the country.
- Discuss application of cueing for communication, literacy and speech development
- Describe Cued Speech and how it is applied to early language acquisition in families
- Identify the similarities and differences between ASL and Cued Speech as communication modes.

Sarina Roffé is the parent of a native cuer, past president and current Executive Director of the NCSA. An award-winning journalist, she is the subject and author of many articles on deaf education, parenting and the importance of English language in the development of literacy skills. She has presented before national audiences. Her presentation style is interactive, combining a professional presentation with personal anecdotes.
