Deaf with Disabilities - Parent Professional Perspective
An estimated 40% of all children who are deaf/hard of hearing have a secondary disabling condition listed on their IFSP, IEP or 504 documents, some more than that. Because most interventionists have not been trained to work with these children, they can present a special challenge. This presentation provides information regarding what struggles we see with these students today and down the road once they are in the classroom setting. The presenters will share some tips for early interventionists that can be used to enhance therapies for babies and toddlers as well as parent support. The presenters are both parents, one is a parent of a 19-year-old who has gone through early intervention and mainstream public school with comorbid ADHD and Deafness. The other presenter has a kindergarten child who has multiple medical and developmental needs. The presenters will go into depth about the needs of their children and how you can help. This session will include specific examples that the presenter’s families have faced and solutions that proved successful. If you have clients who have children with multiple needs, this is a great way to hear real life tips and tricks that worked for these families.
- Participants will get a bird’s eye view of life with a child who is deaf and also has multiple disabilities
- Attendees will learn what types of interventions work best for these mulit-challenged children
- Professionals will leave with background knowledge on deafness with other disabilities, how many are we talking about, what types could they see, etc.

Andrea Marwah

Andrea Marwah received her B.A. in Psychology from North Central College. Since her daughter’s diagnosis of hearing loss in 2002, Andrea has devoted her career to educating parents and professionals about the ADA, IDEA, and effective advocacy for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. She is a sought-after presenter both locally and nationally, speaking on topics such as special education rights and advocacy, the impact of deafness and hearing loss (especially when combined with other disabilities), socialization and Theory of Mind, and best practices for supporting children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Andrea currently works for the Illinois Department of Human Services – Illinois School for the Deaf as an outreach trainer and consultant for families and professionals serving children who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind. She also serves as a parent advocate, helping Illinois families secure appropriate educational supports and services for their children, and collaborates closely with the Illinois Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (IL EHDI) Program. In addition, Andrea lead the Illinois chapter of Hands & Voice for 16 years. She continues her work with the organization as the IDEA Liaison for the Guide By Your Side Program, providing unbiased information, one-on-one advocacy, and IDEA support to families. She is also a national trainer for the Hands & Voices ASTra Program, a member of the Hands & Voices Speakers Bureau and a member of COPAA (Council of Parent Advocates and Attorneys). Andrea serves on numerous local and national committees and previously completed six years of service on the Advisory Commission on Disabilities in her hometown of Naperville, Illinois. She lives there with her husband, Ajay, and they are the proud parents of three young adult children—Samantha, Julia, and Andrew.

Andrea Stambaugh became vested in CMV awareness and advocacy when her son, Axel, was born with congenital CMV in June of 2016. Since receiving Axel’s congenital CMV diagnosis Andrea has become an active member of the Board of Directors for IL Hands & Voices, and formerly a member on the patient education and outreach committee for the National CMV Foundation, serving on the parent planning committee for the 2018 CMV Public Health and Policy Conference, hosted a CMV Awareness fundraiser in her hometown that raised $5,300 for NCMVF, a parent liaison volunteer for Ann & Robert H Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and a parent advocate for Cochlear Americas. Andrea has presented on CMV at the Hands & Voices Leadership Conference and EDHI Conference, and has had several articles on CMV published on CMV as well as keeps a blog called, Axel’s Journey With CMV, on Facebook.
