Assessment as Intervention: Utilizing video replay as a social emotional intervention
Communication develops in the context of primary relationships. Supporting social emotional development and communication must begin with the parent-child relationship which is the foundation of all future learning. The WI EHDI Program has utilized the Parent Child Early Relational Assessment and the newly published Brief Early Relational Assessment (B-ERA) to identify areas of strength and concern in the early parent-child relationship development. An essential component of the B-ERA is a video replay with the parents. This video replay invites a parent and provider to look together at their relationship with the child. It facilitates an opportunity to explore their sense of enjoyment and challenges in parenting this child and the meaning of their child and their child’s behavior. As behavior IS communication, both the relational profile and the video replay discussion can then be used to develop relational goals that support both communication development and social emotional development. This session will have video case studies to demonstrate the tool and the ways it has supported deafness-specific early intervention.

Elizabeth Seeliger

Elizabeth Seeliger, AuD, is the Wisconsin Sound Beginnings Program Director and has worked as a clinical audiologist in a variety of settings, helping guide children and families through the process of hearing loss diagnosis and intervention. Elizabeth has been a leader in developing a data, tracking and referral system; educational resources for hospitals and providers; and an interactive notebook for parents. Elizabeth spearheaded the initiative to enable Wisconsin homebirth midwives to provide UNHS. Elizabeth has also provided technical assistance and consultation locally and internationally on quality improvement in EHDI systems. Elizabeth served on the board of directors for the WI Chapter of Families for Hands & Voices and Hands & Voices HQ. She is endorsed in Infant, Early Childhood and Family Mental Health.

Jessica Dallman

Jessica Dallman is a tri-lingual (English, ASL, Spanish) multicultural counselor based out of Wisconsin. Jess is passionate about weaving together trainings as a wilderness/equine therapist (Naropa University), special education teacher (Teach for America), early interventionist (Gallaudet University), and infant mental health clinical mentor (UW-Madison) to serve clients and the community. They have an interdisciplinary, relational, and social justice framework that she brings to all of their work. Jess launched the Wisconsin Hawthorn Project, a free trauma-informed care resource for agencies that serve children and families, and provides Reflective Supervision/Consultation to organizations serving young children.

Christine Kometer

Chris is the WI Sound Beginnings Early Intervention Coordinator and is a Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing,
Chris brings over 30 years of experience to her role. She has experience teaching children who are D/deaf
or hard of hearing in four different states in a variety of settings--public school, university clinic, statewide
outreach, and most recently, 17 years in a non-profit agency as Program Director for Early Intervention
services, working within the WI Birth to 3 Program. She has worked with children and families who use
American Sign Language, Total Communication and Listening and Spoken Language. She received an
Advanced rating in ASL skill level and also holds certification as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist
(LSLS Cert AVEd). She has a Certificate in Infant, Early Childhood and Family Mental
Health as well. She has also coordinated parent educational and support services, social-recreational
events for children and families, sign language classes and larger family-focused events such as an annual
statewide Family Learning Vacation weekend.
