Family L.E.A.R.N.S.. Together: Going Beyond Early Language Acquisition and Development Opportunities with Deaf Community Cultural Wealth

Dr. Julie Rems-Smario will introduce her pilot training kit called “California Family L.E.A.R.N.S. Together”, which is in developmental stages. The name is based on the following Deaf Community Cultural Wealth capital (DCCW): Familial, Linguistic, Educational, Aspirational, Resistant, Navigational, Social, and Trauma Prevention. Trauma prevention in Early intervention ensures healthy identity and language development accountability. The training kit includes a checklist for families to incorporate eight DCCW capital critical for healthy whole Deaf child development, protecting their Deaf children from the harms of systemic deficit models of being Deaf and hard of hearing. With this kit, families can learn how to support their Deaf children by understanding and developing their DCCW capital at home and school.

  • The participants will learn about specific cultural capital that are critical for language acquisition and development.
  • The participants will recognize that language acquisition and development is not separated from Deaf community cultural wealth capital.
  • The participants will develop understanding of eight critical Deaf community cultural wealth capital that promote young Deaf and hard of hearing children early language acquisition and development.

Dr. Julie Rems-Smario, Ed.D works as an Early Language and Education Consultant in California at CORE, California School for the Deaf, a program of State Special Schools and Services at the Department of Education. Julie's work includes working as a co-director of California's Early Hearing Detection and Intervention, training Early Start professionals on how to develop language milestones goals for IFSP/IEP, supervising SB 210 data, developing resources for families of Deaf children, and providing technical assistance to Early Childhood Education professionals. During her free time, she volunteers as one of the Public Relations Director of a national campaign, Language Equality, and Acquisition for Deaf Kids (LEAD-K).
