Expanding Awareness of cCMV in Arizon:Stop CMV AZ / Alto CMV AZ

Expanding awareness of cCMV in Arizona: Stop CMVAZ / Alto CMV AZ Muldoon KM, Kaltenbach , Dobson SD, Klomhaus H, Selbst M, Olsen L Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the leading non-genetic cause of hearing loss which is often late-onset, making early diagnosis difficult without newborn screening. Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the leading viral cause of disabilities in the United States. An estimated 400-600 newborns are born with cCMV annually in AZ, of which ~80-100 children will have permanent disabilities. cCMV infection is preventable if women are educated about contracting it while pregnant. Research has shown that cCMV is disproportionately higher in communities of color due to disparities in access to prenatal care, medical information, and clinical follow-up. The absence of newborn cCMV screening coupled with a lack of cCMV awareness is the root cause of its continued impact on Arizonan communities. Stop CMV AZ/Alto CMV AZ includes key public health, parent and provider collaborators associated through AzEHDI. The goals of this multi-year program is to 1) measure and 2) develop and improve the effectiveness of culturally humble educational materials about congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) prevention, developed specifically for Arizona’s unique maternal population comprised of a relatively high proportion of young mothers who identify as Spanish-speaking/Latinx. 3) expand educational materials and activities in ASL and Spanish. By using the lens of cultural humility and partnerships in our community, we aimed to evaluate whether Spanish-speakers more likely to engage in health education materials when presented in Spanish. It is important to measure the effectiveness of materials developed specifically to address the concerns of Spanish-speaking populations to increase health equity around prenatal CMV education. Learning Objectives: 1.define culturally humble materials 2.define humility in relation to health education. 3.discuss evidence for engagement with educational materials.

  • define culturally humble materials
  • define humility in relation to health education
  • discuss evidence for engagement with educational materials
