Go Team! Examples of Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Sound Beginnings at Utah State University provides a variety of interdisciplinary practicum experiences for graduate students in the Audiology, Deaf Education and Speech Pathology programs. In addition to the primary placements in classrooms and clinic, Deaf Education and Audiology students work with children in individual therapy settings for a semester. Likewise, the SLP students plan and conduct classroom integration activities with large and small groups. Deaf Ed and SLP students observe audiology evaluations and have ready access to the clinical files for children they currently serve. All of this is accomplished in close communication with clinical supervisors and LSL mentors. These clinical placements often occur during the same semester, which provides a broader scope of the child’s needs across settings. It also helps build trust and familiarity with the individual client. Weekly collaboration meetings facilitate coordination. We take into account classroom themes and vocabulary, behavior management strategies, and treatment plan targets. We also have a chance to share successes and expectations for generalization of skills. One of the tools for progress monitoring and planning has been a goals-at-a glance form. This allows both the service provider in classroom and individual settings to know what targets on a treatment plan have been met and which need greater focus. Feedback from students has been positive. It has been helpful to transfer theory to practice. Seeing how it benefits multiple disciplines, but especially the children, is motivating to implement such practices in future professional settings.

  • Demonstrate practical implementation of Interdisciplinary collaboration between Deaf Ed. teachers and SLP
  • Illustrate tools for co-planning and data collection
  • Show impact on graduate students reception of the process and likelihood to continue
