In “Plain Language”- Neurodevelopmental Considerations for Children Who are DHH with known medical complications (DHH with Disabilities/DHH Plus): Translating Medical Jargon to Enhance Practical Understanding for EI Providers and Families
Every child is different; no one can predict with certainty a young child’s growth. Yet, there are some common etiologies (causes) of being deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) that do have known implications for a child’s development. In the presence of medical complications or particular diagnoses, certain developmental outcomes can be anticipated.
This presentation will be offered by a psychologist with experience in conducting cognitive, psychological, and developmental assessments with children who are deaf with disabilities and their families. It will highlight several common etiologies (causes) of being DHH and their neuropsychological impacts.
This session will serve to “translate” information about neuropsychological sequelae of particular condition to “plain language” for the EI Providers and families that can benefit from greater understanding of the ways that being DHH with a particular disability can influence a child’s developmental trajectory.
- 1. Describe “neuropsychology developmental trajectory” in one’s own words to explain to other families what this means.
- 2. Ask at least two informed questions to medical providers based on their particular condition of the child who is DHH Plus/DHH with Disabilities
- 3. Identify two or more “things to watch for” in their child’s development informed by the child’s particular condition
