You’re Headed To Mainstream... So, Now What?
When a child turns 3, some families walk up the school building steps and are off to uncharted territory…the mainstream preschool classroom. This environment brings many exciting and challenging learning experiences for the new student, including higher noise levels, inattention to classroom acoustics and new environmental sounds. How can we ensure that parents of a DHH child, as well as educators, are adequately prepared? Whether you’re a birth to three provider or a Teacher of the Deaf (TOD), you all have important roles to play to empower families and teachers for this transition. Join our presentation to hear from a parent who has lived the journey, as well as a birth to three provider and itinerant TOD on their approach to parent/student advocacy and school readiness. When parent coaching meets teacher coaching…there’s a success story you’re going to want to hear!
- The participant will discover a variety of ways birth to three providers can coach parents/caregivers to learn about their child’s hearing loss and how it may impact their educational experience.
- The participant will be able to describe how an Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf can support mainstream educators when they have a student with hearing loss in their classroom.
- The participant will identify ways a parent/caregiver can exemplify and facilitate self advocacy for their child with hearing loss.
