Empowering Families Through Parent Coaching: Effective Strategies for Delivering Culturally Responsive Teleservices in Early Intervention
Parent engagement is a cornerstone of successful early intervention for infants and young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. As teleservices become a permanent feature of early intervention, there is a critical need to ensure that coaching practices are not only evidence-based but also accessible and responsive to the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of families.
This session will highlight practical coaching strategies that strengthen family confidence, improve carryover of listening and spoken language (LSL) strategies in the home, and address equity gaps faced by underserved and multilingual families. Drawing from current research and professional practice, the presentation will explore barriers such as limited English proficiency, technology challenges, and cultural perspectives on communication, and provide actionable approaches for overcoming them in virtual early intervention settings.
- Identify common barriers that multilingual and underserved families face when participating in teleservices for early intervention.
- Apply at least three parent coaching strategies that promote family confidence and support the use of listening and spoken language strategies in the home.
- Develop culturally and linguistically responsive approaches for adapting teleservice tools and materials to align with families’ language preferences and cultural values.
