Co-Treatment in Pediatric Audiology
Co-treatment has long existed in the world of rehabilitation and therapy, where two specialists from different disciplines work together with a child to maximize goals and outcomes. Within the field of audiology, integrating co-treatment is a rather novel practice. There are several advantages to using co-treatment models for audiology patient care, including: reducing the appointment burden on families, integrating interdisciplinary practice, and implementing an overall holistic management using a “whole child” practice approach. Landsman and colleagues surveyed audiologists across the US to determine their involvement on multidisciplinary teams. The results of this survey suggested that 100% of audiologists felt they should be included on multidisciplinary teams, but <24% were currently participating on a team. This presentation will highlight where opportunities exist to integrate co-treatment models in already established pediatric practices in an effort to improve audiology involvement in this treatment approach.
The co-treatment model will also be reviewed as it relates to differences between multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary teams in medical practices; where does co-treatment fall along that spectrum?
The focus of this session is aimed to globally highlight how a large and comprehensive pediatric clinic integrates co-treatment with speech therapy, psychology, social work, and education to achieve an optimal patient-centered care approach. This session will include clinical case examples, resource references, videos, and other supplemental material.
- Participants will identify the differences between multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary care within the field of audiology.
- Participants will outline the benefits of co-treatment model connecting pediatric audiology to other shared specialties.
- Participants will describe the collaborations needed to develop a co-treatment model within their practice.
