How Screener Education on Risk Factors Can Lead to Better Parent Education
JCIH 2019 Guidelines state: “Risk factor information should be collected, stored, and easily accessible in the electronic medical record, since the presence of risk factors places the infant at increased risk of delayed-onset hearing loss, regardless of the newborn hearing screen results. A significant number of children will pass the newborn screen or rescreen who are at risk for later-onset hearing loss.”
Risk factor education for newborn hearing screening technicians can lead to better follow up outcomes because parents and families are knowledgeable and have the tools they need to move forward. Screener education increases screener proficiency, screener confidence and overall leads to program enhancement.
We will outline our Risk Factor Education Program, which includes a 3-minute video used to educate all hearing screening technicians and a parent friendly handout detailing the risk factors.
- Participants will be able to list JCIH Risk Factors.
- Participants will be able to explain the need for risk factor monitoring when a baby receives a passing result prior to discharge.
- Participants will be able to explain the importance of involving the family in risk factor education and understanding.
