Electronic Diagnostic Audiology Reporting using HL7 Standards
This presentation will review the development of the HL7 Diagnostic Audiology Reporting Standards and describe the Rhode Island Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program’s experience implementing electronic reporting from audiology clinic electronic health records. Challenges with recruitment and steps to establishing electronic interfaces with the RI-EHDI information system will be discussed. This includes modifications to electronic health record workflows, IT scheduling, production of test messages, leveraging other HL7 interfaces, and storage and display of data. Progress establishing interfaces for two major hospital audiology clinics will be reported.
- Participants will be able to describe the development of the HL7 Diagnostic Audiology Reporting standards and how to access it.
- Participants will learn about the process and challenges associated with establishing electronic audiology reporting in Rhode Island.
- Participants will understand the current progress toward electronic reporting from two major hospital audiology clinics.

Ellen Amore is currently Deputy Director of the Center for Health Data and Analysis and Manager of KIDSNET, Rhode Island’s integrated child health information system that contains preventive health care information for Rhode Island children. She is PI on the CDC EHDI Cooperative Agreement. Other programs at the Rhode Island Department of Health that she has managed include Newborn Hearing Screening, Newborn Bloodspot Screening, Newborn Developmental Risk Assessment and home visiting. Her education includes a BA in Human Biology, with a concentration in child development, from Stanford University, and an MS in Maternal and Child Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.
