UNC’s Hearing and Development Clinic: Supporting DH/H+ Patients and Families through Multidisciplinary Care

The landscape of healthcare has largely been influenced by the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). This ICF model recognizes human functioning as a universal human experience focusing on the consequences and not on the causes of the limits of functioning. This perspective considers all aspects of a person’s life recognizing the individual as the primary focus. Multidisciplinary clinics are modeled after this approach. They collaborative teams in which processes such as evaluations or development of a patient’s care plan are undertaken jointly with professionals from different disciplines collectively bringing forth their areas of independent expertise to achieve the same goals of high-level quality care. The Hearing and Development Clinic at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a multi-disciplinary clinic for DH/H+ patients and families. The team is comprised of Audiology, Psychology, Educational Psychology, Speech-Language Pathology, and Occupational Therapy with additional providers as needed. It also includes student trainees from each discipline providing a unique interdisciplinary educational experience for future clinicians. This presentation will review the benefits of interdisciplinary practice related to best practices in family centered healthcare, student training and professional development. We will share our clinic’s model for successfully supporting DH/H+ patients and families within the framework of the WHO-ICF model.

  • Describe the benefits of multidisciplinary care teams to patients, families, student training, and professional development
  • Identify the key infrastructure for successful multidisciplinary teams
  • Associate the WHO-ICF model to effective inter professional practice
