Transitioning from Early Intervention to Preschool: Tips from Teachers
Transitioning a child who is deaf or hard of hearing from early intervention to preschool
can be an overwhelming process for parents/caregivers. For professionals, it raises questions
about new, incoming students. Ensuring the child is fully prepared for their next educational
placement, transition planning involving the entire team is essential.
Transition planning allows parents to develop confidence in their decision making. It encourages
their role as an advocate and to actively participate in their child’s education. It helps the parent
to engage with and to develop positive relationships with school professionals in a constructive
manner.
Shared information will assist the teacher in getting to know the child before they enter the classroom.
Transition planning enhances a child’s confidence upon entering the school setting. It
will help language and routines to be more familiar. This will help the child become motivated to engage in new activities in a
school setting.
In this presentation, participants will be made aware of the differences between services
provided in early intervention and the preschool setting. Presenters will discuss the value of an
experience book to encourage a positive transition between early intervention and preschool.
Attendees will have the opportunity to create an experience book. Recommendations
will be made regardng ways of communicating their child’s strengths and needs to the classroom
teacher. Attendees of the presentation will be provided with a template for an experience book
as well as a link to create their child’s “About Me” introduction for the team.
