D/HH Teen and Young Adult Panel Discussion
This panel discussion brings together Deaf and Hard of Hearing teenagers and young adults who represent a wide range of hearing levels, communication modes, and hearing technologies. Panelists will share their lived experiences, highlighting both the joys and challenges of growing up Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Discussion will include the early childhood supports, relationships and opportunities that were most impactful in shaping their confidence, self-advocacy skills and long-term success. Through personal stories, participants will discuss their educational pathways, use of accommodations and supports, and their journeys into college, vocational training or the workforce.
- Reflect on how clinician and family expectations, communication practices, and access to accommodations can influence long-term educational and vocational success.
- Recognize the importance of self-advocacy, identity development, and peer connection in supporting positive outcomes during adolescence and young adulthood.
- Identify common strengths, concerns, and priorities expressed by Deaf and Hard of Hearing teens and young adults across different communication modes and hearing technologies.
