Beyond a Congenital CMV Diagnosis: Opportunities for Early Interventionists to support children with cCMV and their families.
This presentation goes beyond the initial diagnosis of congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) and explores the evolving role of early interventionists in Minnesota. It highlights how increasing awareness and knowledge about the impacts of congenital CMV influences the development of individualized supports within the IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan) and IEP (Individualized Education Program).
Since the implementation of universal newborn screening for congenital CMV in Minnesota, early interventionists have received targeted training on the importance of awareness and the potential impacts for a child as they grow and develop. This presentation will share various strategies used to deliver this training and offer practical approaches for incorporating the potential impacts of congenital CMV into a child's IFSP or IEP.
Furthermore, the session will showcase real-life examples of Minnesota early interventionists who have successfully adjusted their service delivery to meet the unique needs of children diagnosed with cCMV. These professionals have tailored their interventions based on the condition’s possible impacts and the recommended follow-up care, ultimately improving outcomes and support for both children and their families.
By the end of this presentation, attendees will have a deeper understanding of strategies for providing information and education to early interventionists, gain insights into how to structure effective supports in an IFSP or IEP, and leave with actionable examples from the field to guide their own practice
- List 2-3 activities that can be used to increase educators’ awareness and knowledge of congenital CMV.
- Identify 2-3 specific strategies that could be included in a child’s IFSP or IEP to bring explicit awareness and knowledge about the child’s congenital CMV diagnosis and possible impacts.
- Describe 2-3 examples of how early interventionists might be flexible in their service delivery to meet the unique needs of children with congenital CMV and their families.
