What Factors Predict LFU/D? A Multi-dimensional Analysis of White and BIPOC Communities who Reside in Metropolitan and Non-metropolitan Areas
As part of a national effort to identify infants who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (D/HH), many EHDI programs are working to decrease their rates of Loss to Follow Up/Loss to Documentation (LFU/D). Current literature has demonstrated that urban Black/African American babies have a higher likelihood of being lost after not passing their hearing screen, however, there is little research to date that explores the metropolitan and non-metropolitan White and communities of color. The goal of this presentation is to explore LFU/D and the differences between and within metropolitan and non-metropolitan White and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities.
- Identify the family factors that increase the likelihood for LFU/D among those who reside in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas.
- Explore the family & geographic factors that increase the likelihood of LFU/D among mothers of infants who identified as White (Not Hispanic) and from the BIPOC community.
- Understand the social determinants that are magnified among mothers of infants who were LFU/D after not passing their newborn hearing screen.

Amanda Hagerman is the Newborn Screening & Childhood Epidemiologist at Iowa Department of Public Health and performs geographic and socioeconomic analysis in the realms of EHDI (Early Hearing Detection & Intervention) and other child & adolescent health programs within her bureau. Amanda is passionate about data dissemination and identifying equitable solutions for low-resource populations within her community.
