So, I'm a Leader, Now What?
Have you been thrown into a leadership position without needed training or knowledge, other than the lived experience of raising your child who is DHH or as a DHH adult? Are you a professional recruiting and/or engaging parent and DHH leaders in your state or territory EHDI program? With EHDI programs being tasked with building and enhancing programs which engage parents of young children who are DHH as partners, involving family leaders and DHH adults throughout the various aspects of the EHDI system from development and implementation to the evaluation of supports and services, educating us on systems and program knowledge alone can often leave us feeling under-prepared and inadequate. This common (and unintentional) “malpractice” can allow many well-intentioned and valuable leaders to suffer through negative experiences while attempting to navigate their leadership course on their own. Simply having the responsibilities as a “leader” doesn’t necessarily make a person an effective leader; personal growth and development are the key to success, otherwise known as personal leadership. We all have the ability to lead, even in circumstances where we feel uncomfortable. This session will look at the traits and tips of successful leaders, and explore how to lead at home, in the community, at work within your many diverse roles, by using practical strategies. With increased confidence, parent and DHH leaders will become engaged, active partners working with, rather than just for, the EHDI system resulting in better outcomes for families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. You'll never again have to ask the question, "So I'm a leader, now what?”
- Participants will learn to identify the traits that characterize successful, effective leaders.
- Participants will be able to recognize their own individual strengths and how to develop their skills, talents, and habits through learning simple strategies.
- Participants will be able to demonstrate their increased confidence in leadership roles, as well as model for others.

Terri Patterson is the Director of Chapter Support for Hands & Voices, Coordinator of the H&V Leadership-to-Leadership (L2L) Program, and a member of the core management team for Hands & Voices Family Leadership in Language and Learning (FL3) Center. Her passion stems from her family, specifically her son who was born profoundly deaf in 1999. Through her personal experiences raising, supporting and advocating for her son, as well as navigating the systems that support children who are D/HH, she provides perspective, herself, as a hard of hearing adult. Her leadership skills continue to grow as she trains and provides technical assistance to over 50 Hands & Voices Chapters and efforts across North America through one-on-one training, leadership development, state and national conference presentations and national organizational engagement with NAD, NCDB, HRSA.
