Targeted Congenital Cytomegalovirus Screening in Massachusetts
Screening for congenital cytomegalovirus (cCmv) is inconsistent and inadequate in the United States. Some newborn nurseries, including those in Massachusetts, have begun screening a targeted population for cCMV. This approach includes infants that do not pass the newborn hearing screening or show other signs of cCMV, such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), microcephaly, jaundice, and hepatosplenomegaly. Unfortunately, this is still not good enough. Studies indicate that targeted cCMV screening miss about 43% of infected infants.
In the fall of 2020, a birth hospital survey was distributed throughout Massachusetts to determine the current state of cCMV screening protocols. This study was conceived, designed and executed by the Massachusetts cCMV Coalition (MCC). The MCC (https://cmvmass.org) was created by parents and professionals in January 2019 to promote cCMV awareness and to develop state protocols. On behalf of the MCC, we will present the survey results with an analysis of statewide protocols. Furthermore, we will present a recent retrospective chart review of cCMV targeted screening implementation and outcomes from one large teaching hospital in Massachusetts. We will include an update on case studies from our cCMV pediatric patient population, all identified by a targeted cCMV screening program. This is a continuation of our ongoing retrospective study of hearing outcomes and management recommendations. Finally, we will like provide an overview of the recent bill filed for the 2021-2022 legislative session in Massachusetts to mandate universal newborn cCMV screening and education. Members of the MCC provided testimony for this bill, “An Act relative to the Early Detection of Congenital Cytomegalovirus,” in the spring of 2021.

- Participants will be able to analyze the progression of hearing loss in various case studies of congenital CMV.

Dr. Heidi Leonard is a senior audiologist with more than 25 years of experience. She is currently serving as the Pediatric Clinical Specialist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. Dr. Leonard’s clinical interests include pediatric audiology, traditional and bone anchored hearing aids, and specialized diagnostic evaluations. Prior to her experience in Boston, she worked at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts, and at the Georgia Ear Institute in Savannah, Georgia. She earned her master’s degree at Michigan State University and graduated from A.T. Still University with her Doctorate of Audiology.

Cheryl Glovsky

Dr. Cheryl Glovsky is an audiologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear with nearly 25 years of experience. She is currently the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) program coordinator for Massachusetts General Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and Cambridge Health Alliance. Dr. Glovsky also acts as the liaison to the Department of Public Health. Dr. Glovsky’s clinical interests include providing patient care to all populations, ranging from pediatric to elderly. She is proficient in a wide variety of services including hearing aids and assistive listening devices, cochlear implants, and specialized diagnostic evaluations. She earned her Master’s degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, and her Doctorate of Audiology from A.T. Still University.
